SMART CAMPAIGN
Smart social media consumption is possible.
We all feel the constant pull to our screens, even knowing its potentially damaging effects. Being a “smarter consumer” is one way to take control back from the algorithms designed to distract + influence.
It is possible; this campaign is a roadmap.
WHY SMART Social Campaign?
After two years of engaging with mental health providers in our community, their feedback was both overwhelming + sadly unsurprising. Screen usage, particularly social media, has a profound influence on our mental health. Our youth are especially vulnerable, as their brains are still very much in development.
What we learned lead us to developing this campaign + a framework to help guide teens (and all social users) to take a SMART approach to screens.
The correlation between mental health + screen usage is not new. There is no simple or straightforward solution. Yet the need for change is undeniable. We see the need + the opportunity. This campaign is the next step to making meaningful change.
Core themes of the SMART approach
S: Self-Awareness: Recognize how social media affects your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
M: Mindfulness: Approach social media with intention.
A: Authenticity: Be you online and all the time.
R: Responsibility: Recognize how social media affects your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
T: Truth: Seek and share information with integrity.
The Power of 5
The campaign will focus on 5 of the leading issues affecting mental health in our community’s youth. From January 2026 - May 2026, each month we will target one of these issues.
Misinformation | Cyber Bullying | Sleep Deprivation | Addictive Behavior | Social Comparison
Each month will feature related: shareable social, core community engagement activities, community speaking engagements, social media usage CTA.
Correlating threads of eduction around brain development, usage + behavior data will be paired with tools to build awareness + motivate healthier actions.
Goals of SMART Social Campaign:
Raise Key Awareness | Inform with Data | Reframe the Perspective | Motivate toward Action | Inspire the Conversation
These goals will guide the messaging + strategy of the campaign. By leveraging the SMART approach to screens around the Power of 5, core issues of social media usage - we hope to educate + empower teens and the community to be healthier social consumers.
This ambitious campaign is designed to engage the entire community + provide education that will benefit all ages. Its purpose is to have lasting change in our youth and community’s ability to discern and consume social media so its influence is more positive on the user’s mental health. The real work is just beginning. Your support is essential. Resources of all types are needed to make this campaign a success. Financial support, in-kind donations, volunteer power, advocacy are just a few of the ways you can make a difference.
